Designing El Roi House: Interior Decorating With Purpose

The year 2025 brought many meaningful moments for Erica’s Events & Décor, but few compare to the opportunity to help design El Roi House, a transitional home for mothers and children in Southern Maryland. This interior decorating project became deeply personal because it gave me the opportunity to turn my pain into purpose and use part of my own story to help create something meaningful for other families.

Being able to transform my own struggles into something meaningful has been one of the greatest honors of my life.

When the Poiema Movement asked me to help create the decorating plan for the newly built El Roi House, a transitional home for mothers and their children, I felt an immediate calling.

Why the El Roi House Project Became Personal

Growing up, my mom entered a transitional home while battling drug and alcohol addiction. I remember wishing I could have stayed with her, but at that time, places like El Roi House did not exist for mothers and their children.

That experience shaped me.

And today, it fuels me.

I’m grateful to say my mom has now been in sobriety for more than 30 years—a testament to the power of support, faith, and second chances.

Having my mom with me at the ribbon-cutting ceremony made this project even more meaningful.

Seeing her smile as we walked side by side, celebrating a home that represents the kind of support she once needed, brought a deep sense of closure and gratitude.

It was truly a full-circle moment, honoring her journey, our shared resilience, and the opportunity to give back to other mothers and children walking a similar path.

Her presence reminded me that the work I do isn’t just about design.

It’s about legacy, love, and the enduring power of second chances.

Designing a Home With Purpose

As a designer, I wanted El Roi House to be more than beautiful.

I wanted to help create a space where mothers could feel safe, supported, and surrounded by beauty that reminds them of their worth.

A place where healing can begin.

Where confidence can grow.

And for the children, I wanted it to feel like home, a place where they could dream, imagine, and truly thrive.

Thoughtful interior decorating has the power to affect how we feel in a space. Color, comfort, lighting, furniture, and thoughtful details can help turn a building into a home.

For El Roi House, every choice had a greater purpose.

Turning Pain Into Purpose

Pouring love, intention, and dignity into this project was my way of giving back.

Many years ago, a local church helped my mom when our family needed it most. I never could have imagined that decades later, I would have the opportunity to use my own gifts to help create a home designed to keep mothers and their children together.

That is what makes this project so much more than another design.

It is part of my story.

It is part of my mother’s story.

And now, I hope it can become a small part of someone else’s new beginning.

This is purpose.

This is healing.

This is full circle.
